Fancy paper and airy words are not enough to impress savvy Human Resources personnel. Candidates have to use their best efforts to find the right career path, and that starts with an outstanding resume. Here are some tips to help you create the best resume for your job search. 

Consistent Formatting

There are many acceptable resume formatting techniques. You may opt for a traditional resume style that lists your work history in chronological order. Students, young professionals, and those with gaps in their employment history may opt for a resume that outlines specific skillsets instead. 

The particular style you use is not as important as consistency throughout the document—candidates who switch from chronological order to another format run the risk of confusing the reviewer. The end result also appears choppy and disjointed, as if you made some last-minute changes but did not bother to update the whole resume. 

Use Pertinent Keywords

Many employers use intuitive software programs to sift through resumes. Be sure your resume passes through the initial screen by using the correct vocabulary. Choose words that are specific to the role you want. For example, if you are applying for an Office Manager position, you will want to include references to your organizational skills. You may also want to mention your ability to multitask and work without direct supervision. 

Include a Summary Statement or Cover Letter

Just as the language within the resume is important, a cover letter or summary statement can also be a valuable addition. Many candidates underestimate the importance of a cover letter and do not take the time to create one, even when the job posting requests it. The summary statement and cover letter provide a place to state something special or unique about you that may not come across in the actual resume. 

Volunteer work, special interests, and hobbies can be mentioned in their own section of a resume, or they can be added to the cover letter. Either way, there is room for you to express a small bit of your personality in the cover letter. Let your excitement shine through in a professional but motivated sentence or two.
